Chrome doesn't offer to save passwords

Ok, it shouldn't be this frigging difficult, but I simply cannot get Chrome to save or offer to save any passwords - most frustrating being gmail as I have several accounts.

And yes, I've gone to settings and ticked offer to save passwords and deleted all cache/history/cookies and logged out again etc.

It seems a common issue (well done Google) Any ideas before I switch back to Safari/FF?
