[iPad] Tiny white spots on Navy leather Smart cover, normal?

Recently purchased a Navy leather smart cover from the Apple Store as they were having sales. After a day of use, I noticed some white spots, about 3-5mm in diameter appearing on the cover. I know that leather will wear under normal use, but is this to be expected after a day of use? The leather kinda smells like crayons too
