Weird Mac Crash; anyone who can decipher the log for me?
My Macbook Pro (mid 2009) with a recently clean installed Mountain Lion experienced a weird crash. I have never had one like this: suddenly the screen turns white and informs that the computer has been restarted due to a problem. As I restart, the log below pops up.
I had several software running behind: Safari 6.0.2, VLC media player, Microsoft Mac Outlook, Soulseek Mac, and Text Edit. I have no idea how to decipher this or where to identify the problem. Is it a virus? (I have firewall ON) Or worse: is my hard disk dying? Any help in troubleshooting this appreciated!! Many thanks!! Was there more in the Panic Log that you didn't post? If there was a section named Binary Images, it would be worth posting just that. |

Thank you for responding LPZ! I couldn't find the said 'Binary Images' anywhere, the log I posted was the complete "panic report for kernel" and I couldn't find anything similar in Console log either.
Can you clarify an ignoramus what is an 'mds' and how dangereous is it to a crash related to Spotlight scanning? Should I worry about my hard drive dying on me? Thanks! Quote:

The mds process is the system metadata server. Amongst other functions, it provides information to Spotlight. An isolated kernel panic is not something to worry too much about. It is also hard to analyze. It is certainly a good idea to backup your hard drive, but you should be doing that in any case. It might also be a good idea to find some apps to test your hard drive and also your RAM. If the kernel panics continue, then start worrying. |
