To Do or Not To Do

I just purchased the 13" 128HDD 4gb Ram on the doorbuster at Best Buy but am strongly reconsidering going after the 256.

With good memory management and smart usage of cloud options, should I be good or am I overthinking or was it just a bad choice in the first place.

My unit was $999 plus tax and the addition 128GB HDD was an additional $300 which seemed a bit high...

Thoughts?

I would go for the 256GB.
Air SSDs are very expensive at this moment.

It was a MBA so no screen options. Just didn't see the $300 being worth it for an additional 128GB with prices of external HDs being so low.

Also considering buying an 11" 64GB to have because of the price being so low.

I was in the same situation and went with the 256 over the 128.

But again, Air's SSD or flash memory are so expensive at this moment.
OWCs 280GB Aurora MBA SSD is 330USD...
Besides its going to be the stick out type, where you plug it via USB.

Unless you have a bigger computer with extra space to store all your data (iMac, Mac Pro, MBP, etc) I would get the 256GB update.

I would stick with the 128gb option, and rely on a cheap external drive (assuming you are considering the 13" option).

It helps that I don't really have much to store on my air (after apps and mail and disc image, I still have over 30+gb of spare space), so I went with the 64gb storage option (the cheapest one). I don't really like how Apple gouges you for upgrades, so I will try to work around those limitations if possible.

If you really need the extra space (say for boot camp or music), consider going with a MBP instead, and look at replacing the optical drive with another SSD. And upgrade the ram while you are at it.

But that's just me.

So I actually have a 15" MBP and am almost out of space with 500g but don't use most of the benefits, don't need the optical, and travel a ton so the extra weight kills me.

Just don't know if an extra 1tb ext HDD via TBolt or USB 3.0 will be a better value or go for 256?

A USB 3.0 HDD would certainly be a less expensive option. I'd keep the 128GB. There is always the option of the OtherWorldComputing drive. For $330 you get a 240GB drive plus an enclosure to convert your existing 128GB internal drive into an external USB 3.0 drive.

The internal SSD will be a lot faster. So would an external SSD. In general, I get about 300-400MB/s read and write speeds on an SSD, whether internal or external through USB 3.0. On a hard drive, expect speeds closer to 75-100MB/s. It is noticeably faster to load programs from the SSD. That said, an external HDD is a good option for videos, photos, or other large files that you don't need access to all the time.

I picked up the 11.6 with 128 for $899....great value.

Stick with the 128gb. If you needed 256gb (SSD) you wouldn't have to ask.

Do you need windows via bootcamp? If not, you can get 5 terabyte of external USB 3.0 HDD's for $300..

Gives you 192 in total for $70, better than 256 for $300

I don't have the thing yet, but this one or the nifty minidrive should do it.
