Retreiving data from external drive

a virus from a shared drive on a work ( not mac ) laptop affected my files on an external HD. My personal laptop is a Macbook Air and need to retreive files from my external drive, through my Mac. Any suggestions please ? I already detected affected files through the Anti Virus scan, and now just need to retreive files as seems that its all gone....

What virus did the scanner detect?
Is the external drive Mac formatted or Windows? If Windows, is it NTFS, FAT or ?

If Mac formatted, Diskwarrior has saved me countless times.
