Testing out Crossover

I have been looking for a solution to run 2 apps on the mac. I really wanted to run Beyond Compare, a file comparison util that I use as my FTP client. I just got that working, it seems to be supported just fine, Crossover was recommended on their site, so I had a feeling it would work. I imported my profiles and it appears to be working.

File system integration passes the test - It seems to map the contents of the mac's harddrive to the z: drive and the user account to the y: drive. All I have to do is remap the left side folders to one of those drives and its a done deal. yes!

Next I was hoping that the second crucial tool in my workflow - right click enabled encryption of specific files - could be setup using Axcrypt. However on install it threw an error and doesn't look like its going to work.

I am off to find another encryption tool to try. Anyone know of a friendly method, please let me know. I am thinking about traveling with my new mini tomorrow but really want to lock certain items down before hitting the road.

I use the free Truecrypt to encrypt. (www.truecrypt.org)

Thank you for this suggestion, this app looks very good. I am also going to mention it in another thread I have going on that subject as it has not come up yet.

Incidentally, I use Beyond Compare for 2 things. One, ftp which worked this morning. I also use it to manually synch my files to backup drives. It seems, that while it makes the onboard hard drive in the mini very accessible, it cannot read the external drive, thus not compare files from the hd to the external drive.

So, in the end, it kind of works. I can work with this setup until I find a better way. At least I was able to import my ftp profiles, there was quite a few of them.

I ended up learning how to make an encrypted drive and stored that in a folder which I am backing up. I cleared out and formatted the drive time machine was on. I manually copied and pasted the user folder to the drive. I still want to share files with windows laptop, so I am not sure if time machine is my thing.

I wish Crossover/Beyond Compare had worked with the usb drive. It would be a done deal.. there has to be a way. may have to keep testing other VM solutions.

For backup I use the free FBackup (Backup4All is the paid version). I have all my data backed up to a 32Gb USB drive which uses Truecrypt.

These days I use a Mac mini server - one drive is OS X which is partioned with OS X and exFat and the exFat is used for backup (Partition image using Winclone under OS X and for data FBackup to a TrueCrypt container) and the primary drive is a SSD with Windows 7.
