Preview > Tools > Adjust Color (OPTION+COMMAND+C) can do that, there use the Exposure slider.

I second the motion, for this purpose. However, I'd suggest avoiding the Auto Levels button. It often goes too far and loses color information at the ends of the spectrum. Instead, drag the sliders in from the ends of the picture until the point where one or more of the histograms starts to have significant non-zero values. Of course, you can always play with it to see what it does.
