Java not working

Hi, I've got OSX 10.6.8 and java suddenly stopped working today. Not sure what's wrong... I've checked to see if it was disabled in the browser but it isn't; also checked to see in 'java preferences' if it was disabled but again no dice. My error when trying to use it comes up as "inactive plugin" on all browsers. Can anyone help?

Read Post # 7 from Rocketman, he also is on an earlier version and it stopped completely there, minimum version is in a file automatically updated by Apple and I think if you edit that file it will work again.

The following has worked for us on the 600 plus macbooks we have the students use at school.

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum"/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist
