MY MACBOOK JUST DIED! Now normally I am just a lurker because I figure a lot of people usually have the same problem as me, but this is HUGE! In the middle of working on my year-end thesis paper it just died out of the blue so I freaked out!

Pressed the power button and thank God it came back up again and showed how it looked like right before it died, originally showed even my revisions that I had just typed but then it rebooted and brought up the programs without the revisions on Word. Then the Apple notification came up saying my MacBook Pro 15" (bought in Dec 2010) restarted because it had a problem. Funny they called it restart when I manually had to press the power button!

It was asleep for around 26 hours before I used it this morning.

If it only happened once, there is nothing to worry about. Do you backup your important data by any chance, if only via Dropbox?

Anyway, what you experienced is called a "kernel panic" and in your case happened due to some hiccup with your graphic card, thus "WindowServer" (responsible for all the fancy graphics you see - rendering the GUI) panicked and crashed.
