Pretty sure I just bricked my MacBook.. Snow Leopard
Hello everyone. I took a fall with my MacBook in my backpack and managed to break the SuperDrive. It does not work anymore and consistently emits a noise upon startup. I decided to disable the SuperDrive all together and followed a guide I found on google which involved deleting IODVDStorageFamily.kext from its original location and keeping the copy elsewhere. Well now I can't turn on my computer and it won't get past the apple screen in startup before giving me a "cancel" symbol. I can't boot from cd because the SuperDrive is wrecked. What else can I do? Thanks so much.
Edit- holding shift didn't get me into safe mode I assume since I get the de cancel sign. Also, I have the White MacBook pre-unibody design.

You can copy the contents of your Snow Leopard DVD onto an USB stick and install/repair the system from there. You just choose your DVD in Disk Utility and go to the Restore tab, then drag the USB stick onto the Destination field. After that is done, you plug it into your MacBook, hold the Option key and power it on. Then you select the USB stick.
Other than that, you might want to remove the disk drive from the MacBook altogether (or replace it with a second hard drive, or move the hard drive to the optical bay and install an SSD using the OWC Data Doubler while you're at it). You find a guide for that on iFixit.

Okay I that worked! I tried repairing permissions in disk utility but that did not solve the issue..
There are some "permissions differ" and one "warning" that remain but none of them seem to have anything to do with the kext file I moved.
What should I do now?
