My parents have an older 2008 iMac. I was using a 2008 iMac until upgrading to a 2012 model. Previously we could FaceTime without any problems. Since upgrading, I've been experiencing sound drops where I cannot hear anything they are saying. They claim they can hear an echo when they speak.

Has anyone else had this problem? The new iMac comes with a second microphone to reduce ambient noise, and I wonder if that might be the problem.

I can FaceTime with them using my MacBook Air without any trouble at all, so I don't think it's a problem on their end.
