New Soundsticks but NO Volume!

HELP!

I've attached my newly acquired HK Soundsticks III to my MacBook Pro (10.8.2). Volume is set at maximum in both the System's "Sound" (Headphone port) and I Tunes, whether for .mp3 or a cd. But the volume remains very mottled, with little output.

Has anyone an idea of the problem. Please and thank you!

What about the volume control on the soundsticks?
