Someone had looked at the log and said I have a failing GPU. Now when it is under medium usage like Final Cut Pro X it causes panic. But I can still use it to play a movie in iTunes or something like that. Should I bring it in to apple? Apparently there has been defects with the GT330M GPU and apple will replace the logic board for free. I just want to make sure thats actually what is happening.

That's only a partial log. I'm afraid that accuracy requires a more complete one than that.

In the meantime, if you're convinced it's GPU-related, you can go to nVidia's website and update the OS X driver with this:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda-mac-driver.html

However, if it were me, I would uninstall those Avatron third-party extensions that you've got installed before trying anything else.

I noticed it happens when I was try to load files into Final Cut Pro X from a Disk Image. Any ideas?

Yeah, I got an idea ...

How about you remove those Avatron kernel extensions, like I previously suggested?

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.6.5
com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.6.5

In most kernel panics ... 9 times out 10 it usually ends up being caused by third-party extensions ... such as those Avatron ones that you have loaded.

Uninstall them, and if you still get kernel panics, then take it into Apple for a look.

Yes I removed the avatron software, which is air display.

Also did clean install of ML and it still does it. Only seems to happen when using a disk image though. I'm not having some of the problems that other people are having like not waking etc.

The issue with the mid-2010 330M ones were black or grey screens sometimes accompanied with the system freezing. You don't appear to have the symptoms, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee that you don't have the problem either.

You can read about it here (if you haven't seen the link about it posted above):

They were supposedly going to replace logic boards of affected systems for free for up to three years after purchase.

At any rate, it never hurts to ask. I would bring it into an Apple store and see if they can do anything.

A common side effect of the mid 2010 graphics issue is kernel panics related to AppleHWSensor (which he has), and lots of crap with "NVDA Channel Exception" written to console.

Fixed! (Hopefully)

So I took it in, showed the guy everything. Got a call back the next day saying I had to pay. Told him to check TS4088 (a few times) then after being on hold for 5 minutes the guy said they would fix it for free. It was fixed late the next day.

Is there a way to tell if they actually replaced the logic board? Maybe i'm paranoid but that was just really quick and I cant find anything in the logs of it even being booted up between me leaving it there and today.

Really glad I stumbled on this- I've been having a bunch of kernel panics lately as well. Concern about taking my machine to an Apple Store, though- will they give me a hard time (ie, deny service) because I have third party SSD, data doubler, RAM installed?

Just don't want to go through the trouble of driving over to get turned down.

Take the KB article with you. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

We've been having issues with two of our Mid 2010 MBP's with Lion installed. Kernel Panics every couple hours.

Called support and it's indeed a hardware problem. They've diagnosed and solved many cases already. The firmware on the nvidia discrete graphics card needs to be updated and Apple doesn't want to release it to the public. Only way to get it fixed is to send it for a logic board replacement.

Curious if you were able to take your system in w/ all the modifications you have done? I am having the same issues and have also done all the same upgrades. I would prefer not to have undo everything and get it back to original form.

Also, anyone know if Apple will, instead of replacing the logic board, take the system and provide credit toward a new system? I assume the answer is no, but would love to get credit for this one to get a new 11 MBA.

I had upgraded the RAM and HDD on my 2010 MBP 15 and this wasn't a problem at my local Apple Store - had the logic board replaced a couple of months ago. If you are worried and have your original parts you could swap them in for the trip to the store.

I don't think Apple will provide credit towards a new system, I asked if they would let me pay the difference and upgrade to an i7 2.8 :)

I don't live anywhere near a genius bar so I took mine to a local Apple authorized repair facility and they contacted Apple several times about this issue and Apple kept denying the repair. I am hoping OS X Mavericks fixes it

I've just started having this issue and I am out of warranty now by a few months. How is it that I just started seeing kernel panics now? :(

Tried fresh install. Dd not work.

I'm also hoping Mavericks fixes it or at least makes it much less frequent.

Same here

Exactly same problem here. Started showing up recently. Machine is 3.5 years old and modified (SSD).

Actually, warranty shouldn't be an issue. Had my logic board exchanged twice on my out of warranty 2010 15" MBP (with aftermarket SSD).
There's an exchange program that's "extended as needed" per my Apple auth. service centre. If they deny the repair, you should just hand them an printout of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Worked well for me, the diagnostic part is just a 5-minute test performed on site at the service centre. And they switched the logic board overnight.

Hope this helps you.

Has anyone that had this issue already tested this MBP model on one of the Mavericks betas? And if so, is the issue gone?

I did. Mavericks has same problem. Rebooting 3-4 time a day with message about "GPU panic".
Have no idea what to do (

No extension?

Hi,
I have the same problem and my warranty also expired.
But the printout you refer to states: Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro.

I can't find anything about the exhange program "extended as needed"?
Have I missed something or how did you solve it?

Many Thanks!

I bought my 2010 MBP the day they were released and at the point I got the logic board switched the first time it would have been older than three years. The second time it would've been even older.

The technician said nothing about making an exception for me, just that "replacement programmes are extended as needed, until we're out of components".

Might've been a double stroke of luck for me, but those technicians are usually stricter than Apple geniuses are.

Best of luck with getting a new logic board!

I just came back from an apple store to test this out -- my mid-2010 MBP has this issue. It was 3 years in May...so past that.

Nope. they won't fix for free. Was quoted $625 plus tax. then he could do a "special deal" for me for only $310 plus tax.

tempting at that slightly reduced price, but I'm not sure it's worth even that to fix this now 3 1/2 year old computer. Something else could go wrong with it any day - probably the HDD will go soon. then it would be more money...... and more money. I'd need a new latop within a year or two anyway as well.......

YMMV but that was my unhappy experience.

I actually DID try to get them to fix it while I WAS still under applecare. they were sure it was a RAM issue so they replaced that..... I should have come back again while sill under applecare but I did not.
