Someone has to ask the dumbest question ever, so I am happy to step up to the plate.

Does plugging one's iPhone/iPad into the wall outlet do anything in addition to charging the battery? Plugged in, is the device running off electricity from one's utility company, or is it still running off the battery?

Just intellectual curiosity and this:

When I ran my Macbook Pro off utility electricity, it ran faster than when it was being run off the battery.
