I need an smb audio app thatll work in the background and is compatible woth multiple audio formats (mp3, ogg, aac, flac, wma, bonus pts for opus). recommendations? XBMC supports the formats I need, and works over SMB, but doesn't work in the background. Ditto eXPlayer. This app FileExplorer works but only for mp3 (the paid version supports more file formats for video but apparently not for audio).
ideas?

I've quickly merged the info in the SMB bible (see https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1503989/ for more info; the chart is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/81986513/122012/08smb/upnp-smb-chart.html ) and my advanced audio format supporting-specific articles (most importantly, the rows starting at row 130 at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/81986513/022013/201204-mm-chart.ods ).

You should check out the following players:

OPlayer HD
BUZZ Player HD
GoodPlayer
It's Playing

EDIT: Note that this is a list of SMB + extended audio format-capable players, not necessarily those of capable of playing audio back in the background. Let me know if you don't want to lose any money on trying them; then, I'll test the players in this regard too and report back.

Thanks, as usual, for your quick reply.

I was aware that the usual suspects would probably help me for audio, but 'in the background' is really the key. Otherwise I'd just keep using XBMC for that. So if you do have the time to test that out, that would be great!
Cheers,
-e

EDIT: I've also noticed that you're constantly referring people to your streaming bible threads. It would save time if you just put a few of them in your signature :)

OK, will do it some time - prolly tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks - there are so many tutorials / full roundups I've written that I couldn't put them all in my sig :)

Have run the tests (with a WMA Pro source using the built-in SMB server of Mac OS X 10.8.2). The results:

OPlayer HD (manual SMB server addition only!): OK, direct streaming works in background

BUZZ Player HD: OK

GoodPlayer: OK - make sure you enable Audio / Video Settings > Background Audio first!

It's Playing: streams OK but doesn't play back in background

All in all, the first three apps all work OK.

Went with OPlayer since the free version plays the music, and if you just leave the app on in the background, the ads don't figure. Thanks!

Say, you wouldn't happen to have an RDP bible, would you...?

IIRC I've only published one for Windows Mobile, not for iOS.

Audiogalaxy used to be my favorite app for this type of listening. It is no longer available since dropbox purchased them.

StreamToMe is ok, but it is pretty buggy and the buffering time is horrible.

Each one of these apps required a client to be running on the host computer.

I am pretty much stuck with streamtome right now, hopefully audiogalaxy will come back.

They have a lot of the formats you are looking for.

Unfortunately, they don't support the SMB protocol.

lol, I dunno what you guys are talking about. SMB is not RDP and to my knowledge has nothing to so with it. I despise streaming apps and like to be able to navigate my media by folder, which is what old school file sharing via Windows' built in networking is so key. That is what SMB is about, and that is what OPlayer and XBMC allow me to do...
