Adobe Illustrator on Mac

Just bought a new iMac, like a dummy thought old software would be fine so popped illustrator 10 into my shiny SuperDrive and no go !

1 what's the oldest illustrator I can run

2. Thinking of design suit 6 thingy, any good?

Is the software for Windows or for Mac? What exact version is it? Be aware that Windows software will not run on native Mac OS X.

Illustrator 10 for mac it just said does not support this format I think it's to old did not want to spend another 400 quid plus
