Hopefully it's one of those "you don't know what you want until you see it" kind of things.

I'm curious as to if there is even a market for this. I know many people who don't even wear a watch anymore because they rely on their phone. I can't recall the last time I asked someone for the time and they looked at their watch instead of their phone.

I had a radio watch when I was a kid. It was far more novelty than useful, so I concur.

Pff I don't want this. Focus your energy into making iOS and OS X awesome, fast, crash free and consistent.

Must be nice to have a job where you don't actually work. Any job where you do actual work doesn't allow cellphone use on the job, if you're even allowed to have it on your person.

Key Feature: Auto-Authenticate into iDevices

I'll be sold on the watch if it will allow me to auto-authenticate into my iDevices. I want to be able to login to the watch once and allow that to unlock my devices when I'm in proximity to them. Google recently wrote an article talking about how the future of security would be some sort of hardware component. I think they mentioned a "ring" in the article but an iWatch would be even cooler because it would do a bunch of other things too.

The technologie for all that interesting stuff which you could do with an smart watch is not ready now.
It will take 2-3 years before we see such an device!

Google Glass is too nerdy ... I don't think it will be a success (it also will take 2-3 years for beeing ready).

iWatch could be the next smart gadget you need (but technology is not ready now).

- Fashion (I wear t-shirts and jeans everyday everywhere.)
- Health benefits (Will it do a colonoscopy?)
- Security (I'll use my blankee for that!)
- Social networking (I am the only one in the world without a Facebook acct.)

I just don't see how this helps Apple in any way. All it does is move some iPhone functionality to your wrist. How many people are going to voluntarily wear a shackle?

I think it's going to be more like a wristband. Imagine a curved display around almost your whole wrist. That would fix the issue of the display being too small and would definitely revolutionize the market.

I love how the mockups attempt to squeeze the contents of a 4" screen onto something that can't be bigger than say 1-1.5". Never mind the vast differences in wrist diameter from person to person and gender. Nope.

More like the Apple iGauntlet.

I would destroy this inside a week. I am always mashing my watch against say the door frame or edge of my desk.

I can see this as a natural evolution of the iPod Nano, but nothing to do with iPhone...

Who needs a watch when you can just look at your iPhone This product just seems like it's totally unnecessary.

A watch form factor does not solve any problems at all.

People who like watches, like *real* watches. They don't wear them for their utility.
People who hate watches, won't want a smart watch.

Apple focus on products which offer real consumer benefit and solve real problems. They let others make gimmicky crap.

And this idea is gimmicky crap.

You'd rather lug a cell phone in your pocket instead of it being conveniently on your wrist?

Strange.

I'm really looking forward to this. I hate things in my pocket.

Gassée actually wrote "But what really floats their bots, what hardens Apple’s resolve is designing, making, and selling large numbers of personal computers..." For this article it was assumed to be a misprint, but I'm not so sure. Maybe it was actually intended as a pun.

Anyhow, the column was about a lot more than a watch and deserves to be read. Gassée makes some solid observations about how Apple operates. More insight about possible future products can be realized by following his line of thinking than debating the merits of some random idea that Apple could do if they wanted to do it. Apple doesn't make products just because they can; a new product has to fit into a linked scheme or they won't do it. This is what make Apple different.

If this is true, why - as a watch lover - have I completely stopped wearing my timepieces in favour of a Nike FuelBand?

A Nike FuelBand which, incidentally, has changed my life - helping me to lose weight, reach a level of fitness I've never had before and go from 28% body fat down to 10%. And, for the first time, maintain it.
