Getting rid of my iMac. What is the best monitor $1000 will buy me?

Well my 2010 iMac is in the apple store for its third major repair in one year. With apple care dwindling I'm going to go ahead and cut my losses and just unload it on Craigslist.

I pretty much have made up my mind on grabbing a high spec Mac mini, and then just going for a external monitor. Having Hdmi is now a requirement so the Cinema Display is not an option.

My budget is $1000 for the monitor. Dell is running a special for $650 shipped on the u2711. I am also intrigued by the new 29 inch dell. U2913wm.

I'm kinda bummed that in 3 years there haven't been many innovations on the large display front. Most monitors are using the same panels from 2009.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm kinda used to glossy so the apple cinema display looks a good buy.

I need hdmi pass through so cinema display is out. Plus at this point with The dell being heavily discounted the acd is a extra $350 for less functionality.

Some posters have complained about Dell's menu system, which might be a factor for you OP.


Not sure if they have HDMI inputs, but monoprice is supposed to be getting in some "second tier" large monitors soon, if budget is a concern.

Budget isn't really an issue. If the acd had hdmi in I would just grab one of those. This is going in my kitchen area where my gf does her yoga so she wants another xbox 360 hooked up for the nike plus kinect. I will probably end up hooking up a hd cable box as well.

Since there is no practical way to hook up hdmi in to the acd it is off the table. I wish someone would put out a 33 inch ips display with higher resolution. It seems like there is a niche being left unfilled.

Both the UltraSharp U2713HM and the UltraSharp U2713H use an AH-IPS panel, with the later having a 10-bit color support and a 14-bit internal color processor. For the $650 shipped you could've had the new U2713HM, which has USB 3.0 ports and the aforementioned AH-IPS panel.

The U2711 is the 2009 model, that's why it uses a 2009 panel. And the U2913WM is nothing for an XBox, that's for spreadsheets and other text related activities, it'd display the 16:9 image from your XBox as ~24", or cutoff, or clinched.

There is also the new U3014 which might be still within your budget.

I have about 3 terabytes of movies on a server I'm intruiged by watching them in native aspect. I live in the city space is tight so this is our open kitchen/office/dining area. When I do sit down to work on this computer it is to do image and video editing, and my gf does heavy spreadsheet work. Having all this real estate to work with will be nice.

I have also just ordered a high spec i7 mini with fusion so gaming will be on the table. Interested to see how imersive it will be. I bet driving games will rock on it. I may even build a budget windows 8 box to compliment it.

If I hate it they have a 30 day no cost return policy.

Strangely I couldnt find any dell coupons that applied so I just called them. A nice indian man offered me 9 percent off, and an additilnal 5 percent off in gift cards. Total cost of around 600. Im looking forward to it arriving next week.

If 'space is tight', and you want to do serious video consumption on it, 27" in 16:9 is what you want. It has the same screen estate, but is A) more compact and B) suited for movies.

Bottom line: You should've gotten the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM instead.

Meh that top image is just about perfect to be watching something 16x9 and having utorrent or twitter running on the side. Or having a full size window in photoshop and having a ton of space for pallets

why not use displayport cable to connect the mini to cinema display?

The point is that I need hdmi in. There is no practical solution to plugging a hdmi cable into a cinema display
