Apple Releases Firmware Battery Fix for 2010/2011 MacBook Pro 15- and 17-Inch Models

Apple today released MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7, addressing an issue related to batteries with more than 1000 charge cycles. The update applies to Mid 2010 and Early 2011 models of the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro and is a complement to earlier updates addressing the same issue for other machines.

This update addresses a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning.

The update is a 1 MB download and requires OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.5, or 10.8.2.

1000 cycles? How on earth does a 2011 MacBook Pro reach 1000 cycles that fast? Crazy! Must be that 0.000001% of the Apple-owning population that reaches such a number.

I agree, but if you bought it new when they released in 2011 that's nearly 2 years now!

My 2010 (July) is at 1116!

Yes, I love mine.

I works even better hooked up to a 37" LCD -- or -- 4 22" LG monitors at the trade show. (But my "blind self" loves the 17" when I'm out and about or just couch-surfing.)

I wish Apple would release an updated 17" MBP. Don't need retina or DVD drive, though the improved cooling system would be nice. I know it's not going to happen, which is why I'll be hanging on to my 2011 until it dies.

Apparently Late 2011 models are effected as well. The update was available for my machine. Macbook Pro 8,2

2011 2.2 is my mbp, but i'm not going to update. Probably would sell it before it reach 500 cycle mark

Did that didn't work. It simply wouldn't find my internal drive.

Had to boot into an external backup drive then try to reboot into my internal one several times before the internal drive was magically recognised again.

Thank heavens for SuperDuper bootable backups.

if they cycle the battery once *EVERY DAY*, it would only take 2.7 years to reach 1000 cycles.

Edit: My 2010 MBP has only 30 cycles!

Aw man, you beat me. My 2010 MBP has 38, which surprised me. Even though I use it plugged in most of the time, I thought I would have cycled it more than that.

WTF! I had to connect it via USB then it booted... then installed it back into the machine and it is working fine. WTF Apple, WTF?

So the usual rule to backup first is good advice, maybe sure TM has a copy if the worst happens.

My mum has a 15" MBP of the right age but is yet to tell me there is an upgrade and asking me what to do.
