What's the difference between an iPad 3 and iPad 4?
I apparently missed something because I never knew Apple came out with an iPad 4. What's the difference?

[iPad] What's the difference between an iPad 3 and iPad 4?
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/t...arison-review/
There's an article breaking down the differences. If you have an iPad 3 currently just wait for the next iPad if youre thinking about getting the iPad 4. |

I don't think there's a such thing as an iPad 4, I mean, when you walk into the store it just says iPad with retina display.

The main difference in how to tell is the usb connectors. If it's lightning connector, then that's the iPad 4. Otherwise, it's the iPad 3 if it's the old usb connector. |

The iPad 4 has a lightning connector instead of the 30 pin connector,
It also charges 45% faster than the 30 pin connector. The processor is slightly faster in the iPad4. iPad 3 has an a5x processor, iPad 4 has an a6x processor. |

I didn't notice any of that when I was looking at it in the store. Did you notice that Apple never advertised the iPad 4, because there is no such thing. These are both the same product apparently and I wouldn't doubt that an Apple store would willfully exchange one for the other by request.

Yikes
The 4 is a decent amount faster, and has lightning. That's probably it. A simple question, yet many think its a conspiracy

The CPU however, it a good bit quicker, like 2X in most benchmarks: http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-conten...hmarks.005.png

I think Apple was being sneaky. They knew they wanted to release a new iPad, and they already knew they were going to release the iPhone 5, but they wanted to keep the dock connector secret.
Or maybe they're just making all of this stuff up as they go along. |

The iPad4 has these over the iPad3:
-A6X CPU and new GPU, the iPad4 rocks the most powerful mobile GPU if I'm not mistaken. -Lightning Connector -1.2 MP front camera with HD720P video recording -Face Time over cellular IMO, Apple released the iPad3 to keep their position in the tablet market with an up to date product while they prepared the iPhone5, iPad4 and iPad Mini, all of which bring new hardware which probably wasn't ready at the time of the iPad3 launch.

Instead of being presented with a Samsung (LCD) screen as found in the iPad 3, the iPad 4's display was instead manufactured by LG Display

Due to it being the first generation of iPad to have a Retina display, does the iPad 3rd generation struggle to push the pixels with the A5X chip? IMO, the additional horsepower from the A6X on the 4th generation model is much needed to have a smooth experience.
Am I wrong?

The A6X chip in the ipad (4th generation) is more powerful than the A5X chip in the ipad (3rd generation). That's the main difference between the 2. Ipad(3rd generation) was marketed as "the new ipad" and ipad(4th generation) is marketed as "ipad with retina display". They are 2 different models.

is not a "feature" its forced obsolescence as the iPad 2 could do that, its just they "choose" not to update it so you will buy a new iPad, as with 98% of the "features" apple announce with each new iphone/ipad.

Sure, of course- but this turned out to be an interesting discussion regardless.
I've owned the 4 and am grateful I hadn't sold my 3. In my everyday, real life I simply didn't notice the improvements. Not that they're not there, as on paper, I am sure they are. Just for me it didn't make sense to get rid of my iPad3 32GB with AT&T for less money than the 16GB wifi vs of the iPad4 cost me. Instead I was able to sell on eBay the 4 at $550. (package arrived, feedback left!). Others mileage will vary. |
