Apple Press Event October 19 Confirmed

Apple Computer is once again gathering the press together as it rolls out new innovations. The latest invitation-only event will be held in New York City on October 19, 2005 on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo. Apple doesn’t say exactly what the press conference will be about, but the invitation sent to MacCentral asks to join them as “we unveil Apple’s latest pro innovations.”

This will be the third special product focused event that Apple has held in just over a month. On September 7, Apple launched the iPod nano and just this week they unveiled the video iPod and new iMac.
The event was previously rumored for release of updates to the Power Mac and Powerbook lines.

Great! This sure will make all the people waiting desperately for updates before buying PowerBooks a whole lot happier!

Credit Card in hand if they can actually do something of any substance with powerbooks.

hmmm, I would have bet gold on new PB last tuesday.
Now we are talking "something of substance" and on this I am afraid I would not bet a thing.

Apple is surely yet gradually exiting the PC hardware business so I doubt they would invest substantially in new hardware and related R&D.

Continuing Discussion: Sell PB for Upgrade?

I'm not one too keen on being an early adopter of PowerBooks using Intel chips; I'd rather have a last Rev. PPC computer (portable, anyway) than a Rev. A Intel computer. This just suits me better, in terms of nagromme's explanation.

For the finances, this is what I've worked out. Feel free to correct me:
Assuming there's no bump in the price (and I doubt there are, considering the major updates for PBs are just looking to be a HD display, DDR 2 memory, and a slightly larger harddrive), the final cost is $2699, minus $200 for Edu discount. = $2399. I also don't have to pay any sales tax or additional fees, so that's the bottom line.

I'm assuming, hey, top-of-the-line 17" PB that I bought for $2400. If I throw in an extra 1gb stick of RAM, possibly an iSight and/or external HD and a few other goodies, I can get $2100-2200 for it. Effectively, I'd be paying only two or three hundred extra for upgrading.

I don't mind selling before finding out what, if any, new upgrades are like, because I have an external HD that I routinely backup the entire PB HD to. (Also handy for restoring your computer from scratch/factory setting, minus the installation of all your applications again.) So listing it on eBay ASAP sort of does make sense, since technically it still is a top-of-the-line PB... at least for a few more days. And the auction would last probably past the Media Event, so if by chance nothing comes out, I can cancel the auction.

(I'm a novice at internet auctions, though; don't you think that, since the auction end time would be AFTER the announcement, people aren't as likely to pay top dollar as before? Or would they hear the announcement, then run to eBay to snatch up good deals on older ones?)

I still have to decide what to do. I guess either way – sell or no – I've got a great computer and I'm perfectly happy with it. I'm just trying to think ahead, plan on how to maximize my value.

What kind of education is it that you're getting if $2699-$200=$2399?

Me too.

I just hope Apple does something about the FSB. It has kept the PowerBook line in the performance toilet for too long.

iSight for everyone?

Something has been bothering me about the new iMacs. If Apple, by virtue of putting an iSight into their consumer line of desktops, wants to encourage the proliferation of web cams, then they must has some purpose for doing so. What that end is, I don't have a clue. Anyway, if the iMacs have the iSight, then eventually the PowerMacs should get them too (it seems only fair). This means the Apple Displays should get built in iSights too. At this point, if all the desktops have iSights (the Mac mini would be assumed to be used with an Apple Display) then the only reason for the separate iSight would be for laptops, where it wouldn't fit anyways (this was discussed earlier). Apple might then release a new iSight with a smaller form factor to encourage laptop use (they seem to have done a good job of shrinking it already).

So what would be a "Pro" use of a built-in camera? Possibly to give the computer a sense for the ambient lighting conditions so it could adjust its color response accordingly (and in real time). Or it could just be to spread the use of iChat AV. Who knows for sure.

PMs are a given.
This means either good PBs or none at all though. Apple would not intro 'bumped spec' 7447A PBs at a special event.

Unless the event is more about new PowerMacs (two dual-core CPUs) and the PowerBooks are bumped in specs because they can't do better for now (they're not switching to intel for the fun of it, and PowerBooks are the main reason for that, which means don't get your hopes too high for the PBs).

Apple gave the mainstream what they wanted, now everyone can stop whining about their lack of hardware support. About that Pro Photo thing, Tiger has all the filters built into it, I don't see why Apple wouldn't make something to use them all (kinda like Image Tricks).

Yay! iTunes 7 on the 19th!

Better question: What happened to MWSF - WWDC - AE
as the core "events" to launch hardware? I think the answer is Intel. If you look at the rate and speed Intel and AMD push out new chips I think you have your answer. Now that doesn't mean every time Intel speed bumps their chips Apple is going to have an event but with the depth and width of Intel's chip line it gives Apple a TON of breathing room to release new and different hardware. Ultra thin iBook anyone? Apple's moving into the "zone" where they are preping everyone for spur of the moment "events" It looks as if the day of the MWSF as a major venue for new hardware may be over. Or at the very least its no longer a sure bet anymore.

Yeah, I was a little bummed to see that after Stevezy's cool CoreImage presentation before the debut of Tiger that there's really no way to harness this power in an app. Hopefully this Pro Photo app is for real, and will incorporate them.

Pro and Photo. I can see a Pro iSight - especially given the iMacs new iSifght is better than the other one.

HD screens - sure.

New displays - HD - sure.

You beat me to it. It's like a holy grail. New Apple Announcement? Be the first to speculate new PowerBooks on the following Tuesday. The good part is (hopefully) that some day, some one will be correct!
