David Bowie's New Album Available For Free Exclusive Preview on iTunes

David Bowie's first new album in 10 years, The Next Day, is available for free streaming on iTunes, the artist announced on his Facebook page after an earlier teaser post where he told fans to "stay stuned for a surprise regarding iTunes."

Due to be released on March 12, the streaming preview is exclusive to iTunes. Apple has occasionally offered such exclusive streaming preview in the past, as with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ke$ha and One Direction, working together with labels to leverage iTunes' dominant position in the digital music market.

Billboard gave the 14-track album the thumbs-up in its track-by-track review.
Quote:
Bowie and producer Tony Visconti, who helped shaped his sound in the 1970s as well as produce seven T. Rex records, have struck gold in creating a work that is modern and well-connected to the artist's fabled sonic-past. No matter where Bowie takes the music -- and there are some moments where it seems headed to some off-putting territory -- he finds a melodic hook to swing on. It's an ability he used on "Low," "Heroes" and "Lodger" and that experimental trilogy from the mid- to late 1970s is as much a reference point as the earlier costumed years of "Ziggy Stardust" and "Aladdin Sane." This alchemy is almost magical.
iTunes customers can also pre-order the album for $13.99.

Cd

Once again the CD is cheaper over at Amazon compared to the lossy Itunes download. I've never understood that. Doesn't really affect me as I'll be getting the vinyl.

That's pretty freaky, Bowie
I hear that space is a pretty freaky place.
Isn't it cold out in the Depths of space, Bowie?

Both:
Do you need my Jumper, Bowie?

Jemaine:
Does the space cold make your nipples go all pointy?
And do you use your pointy nipples as telescopic antennae

Bet you do, you freaky old bastard, you.

Pre-digital recordings aside, is vinyl really any better than CD for what I assume is a digital recording, unless the vinyl medium itself is the preference?

Huh, can only listen on iPad or computer - not iPhone. Had me confused for a few minutes.

My guess is that he is a collector. Collectors tend to prefer vinyl. A nice vinyl collection always looks cool on a shelf.

Because Amazon sells everything at a wafer thin profit way below RRP, and seems intent on wiping out everybody's profits in all sectors of retail.

Also the lossy iTunes version has almost equal value to the average consumer as a CD so the RRP is the same. Quality vs convenience...

$79/year, but as I noted too you can add 1-2 other CDs or a book etc... and get free shipping that way too.

I think it's pretty awesome to be able to listen to a whole album free before deciding to purchase.

Just finished listening and have to say this is a really great album for Bowie. Always been a fan of his work, experimentation and forward thinking. I didn't know he was coming out with a new album but after listening I'm buying... although I might buy this CD from Amazon instead. Other artists I would be more inclined to buy from iTunes.

Weird poster campaign, it originally came out looking like fake ads for other products with just the album title over it and no other explanation. Finally figured it out today now that there are ones with Bowie's name on it.

Yeah, I'm also going to purchase it from Amazon (I have Prime); the vast majority of reviews give it really high marks. Nice to see to Bowie blasting at full cylinders.

not necessarily. It takes a lot for vinyl to sound good but when it's all set up correctly it is oh so nice. And fun too.
