If Apple form a joint venture with another chip maker, won't that seriously piss Samsung off. What are the chances of them ripping up the good deal that Apple made in regards to the chips used in Nanos.

Ahh, I was wondering what Apple or Samsung had 'won'....

Got confused because the bold text in the article mentioned $3.8 billion, and I figured that they were referring to the same figure.

Eeep, sorry, it is indeed $4B. I can do math, but not think straight. I edited my post.

Still, though, probably not an out-of-line joint investment for this sort of thing.

I wonder how the whole anti-trust market will play out eventually with the iPod...right now, Apple *is* the Microsoft of the music player world. Well, except that Steve Jobs is a lot less scary when he gets excited on stage than Steve Ballmer.

this wasnt just for purchasing chips, but R&D too, would have been interesting to see what they could have come up with considering the money behind it

It came out later that Apple didn't so much get a super deal on the chips, but rather they went with a newer, cheaper flash technology that other manufacturers' designs aren't able to accommodate. Others will see the savings once they design in those parts.
