Snow Leopard installation problem

After my imac on 10.6.6 started to regularly freeze until unusable, I backed up, erased , repaired, and I tried to reinstall from my original OSX cd.
It said the cd was too old. So I bought snow leopard. This crashes after a few minutes and hangs up saying 30 minutes to go.

Have I missed something out?

Sounds like an issue with the computer. What iMac is this, and does it give any indication of what is going wrong (text on screen)?
