I've got a wd my book studio that worked on my iMac running snow leopard but now have updated to the new OS and it won't mount. Spoke with WD support and was told I have to reformat the external drive which means I lose my data. Anyone know if there is any other option other than reformatting . Plssssssss

It doesn't sounds like the issue is with the format. If SL support the drive then Lion or ML will support the drive.
External drive doesn't work with only your system or any other systems too? Do you get any sort of warning or error messages ?
Try with other systems to get an idea around the issue.
