Andy Rubin Steps Down as Head of Android, Takes on New Role at Google

Google CEO Larry Page today announced that Andy Rubin is stepping down as head of the company's Android division, turning over the reins to Sundar Pichai, who has led Google's Chrome and Apps efforts.
Quote:
Sergey and I first heard about Android back in 2004, when Andy Rubin came to visit us at Google. He believed that aligning standards around an open-source operating system would drive innovation across the mobile industry. Most people thought he was nuts. But his insight immediately struck a chord because at the time it was extremely painful developing services for mobile devices.
Rubin will remain with Google, heading up unspecified new products.

Rubin, who spent several years at Apple as an engineer, co-founded Android in 2003 and remained at the head of those efforts following Google's acquisition of Android in August 2005. Apple has claimed that a key Android framework was inspired by his work at Apple, although the company has refrained from pressing that issue in court as it has focused its legal battles on manufacturers of Android-based handsets rather Android itself.

In his post, Page also shares some new Android statistics, revealing that over 750 million Android devices have been activated worldwide and that over 25 billion apps have been downloaded from the Google Play marketplace.

I hope he had something else lined up.

Why would you "create" some amazing new platform that could change the world - and then just quit?

He had something better to do? Really??

Relevance to "Mac rumor mill": Zero.

I wonder if this was the behind-the-scenes conversation: "Well we're still second fiddle. Who can we blame? How about the guy who made android for our acquisition? Yeah, how about you step down and let someone else give it a try, Andy. Because we're surely not going to blame the product or its horribly inconsistent application among all our licensees. (Because that's our business model)".

No, it is kinda relevant.

On September 12th of 2012, Android reached 500 million activations and had 1.3 million activated devices per day.
In June of last year, they had about 0.9 million activated devives per day.

We are now at a point in time 182 days after Google posted the last activation numbers (the 500 million and 1.3 mio per day).

In that time they got about 250 mio new activations (if they were closer to 800 million, Rubin would probably have said "close to 800 million activations", but he didn't).

So in that time, they had only 1.37 million activations per day. (Taking 250 million new devices since last September as a basis for this calculation)

If you remember, they went from 900k per day in June to 1300k per day in September of last year, but in the last 6 months, they only managed to increase their daily activations by 0.07 million?

The growth seems to be slowing.

Lot's of good stats. Do we know how this compares to apple? That would be interesting to see how the .07 mil growth compares to apple.

Android has the most to lose in growth because they are already pretty much maxed. They have the low end market and if people want the mid/high they are probably already using one.

Plus their #s and activations were always suspect. Android covers so many models...even the ancient versions they still have on the lowest end models count as 'Android activation'...

Interesting events. I wonder if this is a signal flare that ChromeOS and Android will be "merging" so to speak.

Well, the last numbers we know cite 47.8 mio iPhones, 22.9 iPads and usually iPod Touch are half of the iPod sales (probably more in the holiday quarter, but lets use the lower number), a bit more than 6 million, for a combined number of 124 mio iOS devices sold in the 91 days of the last quarter.

Thats 1.36 mio devices sold per day.

But those numbers are from a holiday quarter and January to March should have been lower.
Just taking the numbers from LAST YEARS January - March quarter (actually, two thirds of it, because March is not yet over and calculating "daily" numbers would be too crazy to do^^), Apple should have sold 23.3 mio iPhones in the timeframe from the end of their last released quarterly results until March 1, 7.8 mio iPads (but remember, last years numbers contained the release of a new iPad BUT - iPad numbers are also increasing every year by a large margin) and close to 4 million iPod Touch, for 35 mio new iOS devices sold since the period mentioned in the last quarterly results. Remember, these are LAST YEARS NUMBERS!!!

So while Android activated more than 250 mio devices (but probably less than 290), Apple sold at least 159 mio devices in that timeframe (actually a bit more, because the devices Apple sold from September 12th to the begin of their holiday quarter are not considered, including the 5 million iPhone 5 and probably some of the older devices.

Lets just say Apple sold at least 165 million iOS devices in the same timeframe that Android activated 250-290 mio devices.

That would be 970k sold iOS devices per day (September 12th 2012 to March 1st)

If you consider that the cheapest of these iOS devices costs 199$ (iPod Touch - which is also the device with the fewest sales) and the ASP of the iPhone is usually higher than the base model of the newest generation (in this case the iPhone 5), while probably a large number of Android devices are in the 100-300$ (WITHOUT contract) range, you can see how Apple is having a quite profitable business in iOS^^

If they activated 250 mio new devices: 1.37 mio devices per day
If they activated 260 mio new devices: 1.42 mio devices per day
If they activated 270 mio new devices: 1.48 mio devices per day
If they activated 280 mio new devices: 1.53 mio devices per day
If they activated 290 mio new devices: 1.58 mio devices per day - but in that case, Rubin would have said "We have activated close to 800 mio Android devices worldwide.

LOL. How's this for a nightmare management team: Rubin / Forstall / Sinofsky.

Their company would develop a Google Glass ripoff, running Windows 8 with "no compromises," and it would ship on time even if it wasn't finished.
