such an elegant interface! I wish I had a camera that takes raw pictures just to be able to use it!

It's a Pro app - the 'Pros' have the equipment - or will upgrade shortly to meet the requirements.

This isn't for you and your momma.

I don't know if anyone REALLY believed Apple would try to kill Photoshop. Happily they did not This app meets a specific need that Photoshop didn't meet.

But, it does open a door for Apple to build upon if Adobe does not port over quickly. JMO

I'm not shamed to admit that I don't know nothing about photo software or even about taking a decent picture...

But I'm glad Apple is in the game with a good app, at least for what I heard!

It looks great and from the promotional material, looks highly responsive, but I'm invested in Photoshop (been so for many years), and just upgraded my CS2 (Not cheap either). Come on, $500 is a tad hard to swallow no matter how slick the interface is. Throw us a bone and give us a competitive upgrade price! Is there even lens adjustment control? I don't see it in the features list.

Video card requirements are pretty steep. I wonder if RAW conversions are handled by the GPU.

This app looks very cool - just the sort of thing I've been looking for really.
I would love to shoot more pictures in RAW, but they're just so hard to manage and organise. iPhoto doesn't seem to like the MRW files from my Minolta DSLR, so that's a pain. I hope Aperture supports them.

RAW is definately a great format though - it's fantastic for night-time photography. No need to worry about trying to get the white balance perfect then and there, just shoot and fix it when you get back, without any negative effect on image quality.

Does not. Minimum system requirements show even a 1.8ghz iMac will run it if it has 1gb+ RAM and Radeon 9600 or better - geforce 5200 won't do.

No, it requires a single G5 of 1.8 GHz or faster. You are looking at "recommended."

As i said in another thread, it sucks to see a new interface come out of Apple, but this interface does look pretty damn cool.

(the Open/Save dialog appears to be all grey in that app)

Not sure I see your point. This has a very similar interface with the rest of their pro line.

Picture is worth..

Look at this picture. It says it all. A Quad G5 with dual 30" displays and Aperature. If you are a professional photographer that works with digital how could you resist that setup? All it takes is money.

HA! Except a professional photographer would NEVER use a LCD as their color correction display. They use the LCD to browse, but most pros have a very expensive CRT that has a much better contrast ratio. Even I can tell the difference on a LCD. The contrast just isn't there.

All it takes is money?!?
So THAT'S what I've been doing wrong!!

Sigh... yeah, add it to the list of many, many Apple products I want but can't afford. And note that nobody has posted a surefire (and legal) solution to this minor money problem...

It looks sweet, although I haven't read all the groovy details yet. Yes, the system requirements seem steep and I'll have to check my specs, but it's probably due to showing/sorting/manipulating multiple images simultaneously in your "catalog/stack."

Should be cool to at least play with in the Apple store when it comes out...

What is funny although is that in the minimum hardware requirements, they say you can use a "17- or 20-inch iMac G5 with a 1.8 GHz or faster PowerPC G5 processor" but the graphic-card that is shipped with the iMac dosen't respond to the minimum specs...

* ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
* ATI Radeon X850 XT
* ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro
* ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
* ATI Radeon 9600 XT, 9600 Pro, or 9650
* ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
* NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL
* NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT

my point is that I, like others, are becoming annoyed at the growing number of interfaces. We have:

- Standard 'aqua' looking apps.
- Brushed metal apps (some folks used to say that these were "digital device" type apps, but now finder windows are BM)
- iTunes is now some sort of polished metal app
- Mail is also a polished metal app, but a different shade of grey. Presumably this is the look of modern Aqua apps, since they pinstripe when in the background, but iTunes doesn't pinstripe when in the background.
- And, then, Aperture's got this new look that none of my apps have.

Too many!

But this is a pro app like the rest. Where is there a new interface? Everything you list are home apps; granted they all differ, but this is very similar to FinalCut Pro, Logic, ect. How is it new? In fact, why is it bad that there is variety. Perhaps an application should be designed to best fit it's use. Maybe they should all differ.

Impressive! All the pro photographers are going ga-ga over this piece of software. Thank god it's not anything like Pages.
