PhotoBooth for Other Macs?

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

Apple's support document for PhotoBooth 1.0 indicates that PhotoBooth will work with an both an external video camera (such as an iSight) as well as the iMac's built in video camera.

PhotoBooth is a simple fun application which allows new iMac owners to take photos of themselves and apply various effects -- such as Sepia, Glow, Comic Book and more. The manipulated photos can be sent to friends by email or placed in your iPhoto Library.

For whatever reason, Apple is only offering PhotoBooth pre-installed on new iMacs, and has not yet released the software publicly. According to various reader reports, the 3.5mb application has no restrictions and does work on other Macs with an iSight (or other external video camera).

It works. Haven't tried it on a USB-enabled webcam. Seems to work fine even with some of my digital firewire camcorders.

Hopefully it will become available soon. Realistically I bet they'll include it as one of the upgrades in iLife 06, or something.

Makes sense. If they don't want to give it away just for free, then it could at least be bundled with iSight cameras, and made available to iSight owners.

Maybe they're waiting until they've added a check that makes it iSight-only.

It would be simpler to give it a way for free, but then I'm not an disinterested party

I would have to agree, I think we'll see it packaged within the iLife 06 suite.

My money (literally) is on an iLife 06 add-in. I wouldn't be opposed to a freebie however.

I'm thinking if one was to go to any Mac torrent site, one would be able to download, and if one had a firewire camera one would be able to use it regardless of what Mac they had...

My friend did it...yeah...

Front Row, PhotoBooth and more will make iLife more sought after than ever.

Couldn't agree more. Photobooth is bound to be in iLife, I just hope Front Row finds its way in as well.

It makes sense, restrict the software during x-mas, cash in on tons of iMacs sold, release it to everyone in January in iLife 06. Everyone is happy.

Of course if Front Row isn't in iLife that will be another story.....

That adds to interesting speculation. Could iLife 06 inlcude Front Row, Photo Booth, a remote (or have a separate remote/receiver package available), as well as the usualy upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and Garageband?

That does sound like a product worth buying.

A question to someone who has used PhotoBooth

So, can someone who has used PhotoBooth enlighten me a little on it? Is it really just what it looks like on the Apple website - a program that takes one picture at a time, and applies a range of effects to that one picture? Or can you set it up to be actually like a photo booth - taking a range of pictures in succession, putting them up 4 by 4 (or whatever), etc... Posting them elsewhere, etc...? I'm curious about using it for something like a party, or a video kiosk, fun little diversion, etc...

Having taken the plunge and ordered a new iMac, I'm interested in all of its various, strange little features. Oh, and apologies in advance about mentioning this purchase a million times - it's my first new Mac in six years.

LOL - you're, kidding, right?

Anyway, it would be a fun little app to have around from time to time, but my life wouldn't be over if they didn't make it available to other macs...

Photobooth looked fun, but not much else - a toy application.

I imagine people would use it a few times and then not much after that.

Steve J is going to want to do something with iLife 06 to motivate those who bought iLife 05 to upgrade. Front Row is something that could be added, but the remote would either be sold separately or added to iLife 06+. PhoneBooth is a simple addition, but would not add much sizzle. Aperture Express is another potential, but I see that as a stand alone app in a year or so.

Well, it's probably been mentioned, but iLife comes preinstalled on all macs and has no restrictions.. it's a value added thing until they rollit out as a fun little part of a new software package, or on all macs..

Same thing with the mighty mouse.. they released it early, got some cash from early adopters, then made it standard on all new revisions.

Standard stuff. It'll hit the torrent sites soon and peeps will get to check it out, but it's really such an iMac kinda app; isight built in, big screen flashes.. it'll work on existing puters, but it just won't have the same effect.. I think that's really where the "restrictions" (only iMac for now) make sense. You want it to perform at it's best, so put it with the system designed for it.

It's gimmicky, but it's neat when just thrown in for "free".. Macs can be fun, and be work horses, that's part of the amazing thing about the machines.. they're all things to all people.

Agreed. Play for an hour, then maybe use it every couple months to make a new picture for forums or iChat.

But it sounds neat. It'll help sell products, even if only a little.

If it comes out, it should replace iPhoto. I think having 3 photo management apps is too many.

What? You guys can't be serious. Why would this be included in iLife? It has none of the trademarks of an iLife app. iLife apps are about content creation, not some silly tool that lets you mess around with a picture in some dumb limited fashion. I just don't see that happening, and I don't see what value it could add to iLife at all. I can see it being released as a free download or bundled with iSight cameras though.
