Your First Macintosh

What was your first Mac? A lot of Mac users seem to have fond memories of their first mac.

The first one I ever owned was a Performa 6116CD complete with a 500MB HD, 16 MB RAM, 66 mhz PPC and a 640x480 monitor.

PowerComputing Power Tower Pro 225 - 4 Gig hard drive, 256 Megs RAM, internal Zip and CD, 20" Sony Monitor.

That was the first I owned, the first real mac I used was at work in 94, Mac 8100A/V, with the first PowerPC Processor. I think that was when I started learning photoshop 2.5

The first mac I ever used was the first mac ever. My dad bought it for his company, it booted from disk since it had no hard drive. Still a cool little machine to boot up sometimes. Don't know the exact specs on it though.

The first one that was in my room was a Mac Classic and the one I have now, officially my own Mac, is an iBook.

As you can see I come from a family of Mac users, we have never had any other type of computer in our household except for a Mac
SE/Classic-->Quadra 630-->Beige G3-->Wallstreet Powerbook. We skipped the 603, 604 era because of the high prices and the fact that our trusty Quadra could do anything and everything . Im hoping that a new G4 tower comes next in the line of Macs in my house, but I guess we'll see.

my first mac was an old IIci with a pretty good ricoh laser printer a friend of my dad gave both to me for free...

my dad bought a 14" crt which we later used on a then brand new G3 266 and a macPicasso for dual screening... I produced our class of '99 yearbook on that one (haha, with x-press 3.11 and photoshop 3...).

the G3 is still around and when I go back to Germany after college graduation in may, I will probably use it as a server for my flatmates and me... it even has a voodoo1-card in it

I wonder what happened to the good old IIci... my dad probably gave it away (he's hooked on windowz), sad that...

It was an Atari 1040ST. After using the original Macintosh at work, I was disappointed. A year later, Atari started selling their 68000 line and I felt better. When they offered 1 MB memory for less than $1000 with monitor. It seemed a better deal than $2499.

I wanted the Spectre GCR so bad. It was a cartridge in which you put Mac Plus ROMs and you could boot System 6 and use floppies and all that. It also ran faster than a Mac Plus...WooHoo!

A MAc II Vi, then a Performa, then a 7200 (at the office) then a 350 mhz B&W, since now upgraded to 550 mhz G4, he he he.... now a 400 mhz iBook & a 700 mhz 14.1" iBook....

all lovely machines, though my B&W is a little slow, can not wait for another five years......I really would love to buy a new one, but I like to pay in cash....

powerMac 6100/66 DOS Compatible (w/486 card).

Realized my mistake a week later -- should've got the 8100 w/virtual PC w/DOS, then added Windozzzzzzz 3.1 to it.

And maxxed out the RAM (though it was ungoshly expensive back then).

Favorite programs? MacWrite Pro & Filemaker 2.1. Got lots of stuff done with those two.

Fave games? Can't remember the name of it, but it was a Harrier attacking East Timor, and the Marathon series.

REALLY REALLY HATED -- System 7.5.3: the most crash-worthy OS ever invented.

Hell & dagnabit! I bought a 500mhz iBook after reading dumb comments about the dentability of tiMacs over on the MacAddict boards -- and, had I waited a month or two, could've had a 667 (or something) tiMac.

And now? Am hoping the new year brings nifty new powerMacs to play with, as Photoshop & Carrara Studio would run much better on it.

First mac used - Mac Plus + external HD (20 meg, I think!) that my dad used for his doctorate circa 1986.

First mac owned - Colour Classic that I had for Christmas. I must have been about 13 or something. (40 meg HD internal, 6 meg of ram? definitely a 68030 processor of some description - 25 MHz maybe). It's a very collectible machine now, in the far east. They mod them to have G3 processors. Look it up in a search engine....

Second mac owned -LC475. This was the boy at the time. a 68040 processor, and I upgraded the machine to 12 meg of ram, from what I remember. It also had its own co-processor, which meant it worked quite fast. I played Marathon 2 and the original Escape Velocity on this machine a lot. It was superb for its day.

Third mac owned - PM5500. Upgraded several times - not an amazing machine. I liked the TV card and everything that came with it, and it was my first machine with an internal CD-ROM drive, but it wasn't that impressive. It seemed to crash a lot more than the LC475.

Fourth mac owned - PM6500. Bought it because it was cheap and upgraded it to hell with a Voodoo 1, then Voodoo 3 graphics card, 10/100 ethernet card, extra ram, and now the ethernet card has been replaced by a USB card. Also took out the original lvl 2 cache chip and put in a Sonnet G3/400MHz upgrade card with 1meg of lvl 2 cache. This machine is used daily by my little brother to do school work and play Oni.

Fifth mac owned - Lombard Powerbook G3 (333MHz). The machine I'm typing on now. It has been a VERY good computer for my first portable, and still feels quite usable 3.5 years after I bought it. It now has 320 megs of ram, a bigger and faster IBM hard drive and a firewire PCMCIA card. A cool mac connectivity-wise because I've got USB, SCSI and Firewire. It does tend to crash quite a lot though. It might be because I push it too much. Apart from the Public Beta, I've never installed OS X on here because I seemed too slow to do the job properly

Sixth mac (soon to be) owned - ordered 2 days ago. A PM Dual-867. This will be the first really professional mac I've ever owned that wasn't a portable. I'm looking forward to Christmas greatly
