I believe the OP also wants to know where to find a good (ideally free) hosting service. I don't know of any free hosting services, but good quality annual fee ones are DreamHost.com, Pair.com, and even with a .Mac subscription (www.mac.com), though don't go .Mac unless you want the other features they offer.

I haven't used a host yet, but so far I'm finding bluehost.com to be quite a deal.

"free" means with ads which i find quite annoying. you can find web host for about $5 USD a month. they don't have much bandwidth, but if you aren't going to have a lot of traffic it won't really matter unless you website has a long photos or data files.

Firstly, you need web hosting. I like to suggest surpasshosting (www.surpasshosting.com) because I use their services for my site, and they're very good. However, some other members on the board apparantly like "A Small Orange" and their plans look very good beginners who don't really need a ton of space or bandwidth. Hosting will probably run you about $5 a month. No good hosting is free, unless if you have someone else host you.

Then, you need to get your files onto the server. This is done through FTP. Cyberduck is free, and it works fine. FTP's pretty easy to use. All you have to really do is put in your ftp server, your username, and your password; From then on, it's simply dragging files from your computer onto the server for files to be transferred. If you use windows, then look into using SmartFTP. I've found it easier to use than Mac's Cyberduck.

If you can't afford/ don't want to mess with dreamweaver, you can learn html and css from http://www.w3schools.com/, which is a website I would definitely recommend. It may be because I got into creating websites so long ago, but I think it's so much more fun to actually write your own code. I also ctrl+click and choose view source for any of the webpages that spark my interest. Just keep with it and you'll get it. Good luck!

They host my site for $30 a year, on the "tiny" package. I have about 100-150 hits a month, and so far have used 5% of my bandwidth a month, and that's since I put a video up. Before the video, I used about 2% of the bandwidth. Hope that's helpful.

I run 2 sites on ASO's Tiny package.

I find ASO to be very helpful, and quick about upgrades, backups, etc.

Highly reccomend them!

good free hosting

Free hosting on www.freewebs.com !!!!! When you sign up, make sure to check the "HTML" button. When you are finished with that and are logged into your account, click the "domains" link on the left side. Then click on the "transfer my currently registered domain to freewebs" and follow directions

Another vote for ASO- they're excellent! I pay them $15/month I think for their medium package, but they have ones for as little as $30/year, and the support and such is top-notch.

Suggestion

Just a suggestion... Save all your site files and folders into one main folder. Name a subfolder folder "images" and put all your images in it. Make as many sub folders (directories) as you need. Name your home page index.html
This folder method will keep you from having files scattered everywhere once you upload (via FTP) to whatever server you end up using.
Naming your home page index.html will cause the server to default to the home page.
Also, Fetch is a great inexpensive FTP program. You can get the demo here. http://fetchsoftworks.com/
$25.00 to buy it.
Dreamweaver is a bit pricey and has quite a learning curve, if you are only building one site.
Good Luck

Does your ISP offer free hosting? A lot of them do. Then you can just redirect your domain name to your personal space. For example, your web address from your ISP is probably somethign like www.yourisp.com/~yourusername.

Your domain registrar should offer a redirect to this URL for a very small fee.
