How to make a Minecraft Server?

I'm interested in starting a Minecraft server so me and another friend can play a mod pack...is there an easy way of doing this? Will it mess with any parts of OS X? I found a few tutorials through Google but I wanna make sure it won't do any damage/modify OS X before I start.
