Hi guys,

I have been given a MBA to repair for a family member. Now a few weeks ago it started having issues, and I quickly recovered all files from it, and reinstalled OSX and all seemed good.
Not too long after same issues started occurring. Basically it just failed booting into OSX and hangs on the Apple logo.

I've just ran disc utility and its telling me it could not be verified completely, and cant repair disc.

Now my only problem is I dont want to fork out $200 for a new HDD for it, for it not to be the problem. I am 99% sure it is the HDD... is what I've encountered pretty much what I think it is? I've just never had a disc fail on a Mac before.

The air is one of the earlier models with a HDD not SSD. The disc type is 120GB SAMSUNG HS12UHE. Are there any alternatives to this drive? Also know of any decent places I can get this from that ships to Aust?

This might be related to that the operating system's actually using the disk at the same time. Do you have a bootable medium (DVD/USB), which you could boot from and see if disk utility then is able to fix the disk?

On the other issue, OWC offers SSD upgrades for early MBA's (for 2008/2009 models, see http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=377&type=Internal+Drive).
If you want to replace it with another HDD, that may be trickier, but doable. See:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...w-to-upgrade-the-hard-drive-swap-for-ssd.html
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Air+Models+A1237+and+A1304+Hard+Drive+Replacement/860/1

A drive replacement might not be locally available, but there are some on eBay (e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Samsung...Internal_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item1c30b02ad9)
