Hello all,

I have a laptop that I use to complement my Macbook. It's a windows 7 professional machine and i bought it from my uncle in asia. I don't think the windows 7 pro copy on it is legit (he told me not to upgrade to service pack 1)
anyway, I want to get a legit OS on it.
I remember in my old windows days you used to be able to buy a licence key, and just download a DVD image of the install dvd. it would end up being a lot cheaper than buying even an OEM copy of windows.
Is this still the case?
If so, anyone care to point me to the right direction? I'm looking at just the regular windows 8, not the pro.
Also, would I be able to upgrade as opposed to doing a clean install?

Thank you all in advance!

OEM is probably your best/safest bet.

The online updater I used for my W7 PC runs through an activation check before it upgrades. If you copy is not legit to begin with it will likely fail that check.
