Boston Bombings Thread

CNN, FOX and CBS are all reporting an arrest has been made. CNN says from video taken from Lord & Taylor department store near finish line.

EDIT: NBC reporting no arrest.

Quote:
(CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday ]

An arrest has been made in the Boston bombings investigation based on two videos showing images of the suspect, a federal law enforcement source told CNN's Fran Townsend.

[Breaking news update at 1:28 p.m. Wednesday ]

Boston University graduate student Lingzu Lu has been identified by the school as the third person who died in Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon.

[Original story, posted at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday]

(CNN) -- Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN's John King exclusively.

The breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, said the source, who declined to be more specific but called it a significant development.

Glad to hear this, will be interesting to see what the motivation actually was. Although I do hope that the media just reports on it once and doesn't put the person's face an message up on the front page of every news website for days.

Let speculation of his race begin now.. My guess is an extreme right-wing American/nutter rather than a proper organised terrorist group.

There are a lot of conflicting reports going around. CNN and the AP have both said an arrest was made.

CNN has been the worst at reporting the past few months. They still have not redacted their report.

That's what passes for journalism these days. All of them are in a race to be first to report something regardless of whether they are right or not.

Reports now of 2 arrests made.

Talk about great cover for when gun control fails a little later today.

I agree. I find it odd that they could find a suspect on a video and arrest him 12 hours later.

SUPPOSEDLY....video showed he (we'll just assume it was a he) was on his phone when the 2nd bag was dropped. Cross checking phone records from that time with purchases made for pressure cookers could narrow down the potential list of suspects fairly quick.

If that's true about the suspect being on the phone while he/she/it placed the bomb that person must be pretty stupid.

It's sad that our 24 hour news cycle brings this to us. Not only are they "forced" to break the news as soon as possible, they have your attention such that they can retract what was said when they're wrong. Somebody needs to make a "day old news" website.

We have those, they are called newspapers.

Cable networks are in a race to get it on the air first. Quality newspapers try to get it right.

The New York Times is taking a cautious approach, talking about video pointing to a specific person. The Washington Post cities an AP story saying that the suspect is in custody and an arrest is imminent.

Amazingly MSNBC has shown the most restraint in this "breaking news".

Kudos to them.

That is because they are getting fed from the NBC News department, had they been on their own they would have jumped the gun.
