I have found some info on this for previous versions of OSX but it appears that things have changed on OSX 10.8 because I cannot find things like Character Palette that allow inputing these musical symbols anymore.

I have enabled "View character viewer" on the taskbar but the music symbols are not to be found there.

I am interested in these kind of symbols: ♪ ♫

Go to the Input menu and select to "Show Character Viewer"

In the top left corner of Character Viewer, drop down the menu and select "Customize List…"

Scroll down and check the box beside "Music Symbols"
