I'm not too familiar with the 2008 Mac Pros, but I think the 3.2 was the high end. There's one in the uni surplus going for $500. Specs as follows:

3.2Ghz
8GB of ram
500GB hard drive
8800 GT video card

The machine is in excellent shape and was housed in a department that likes its tech toys, so it's been babied.

If this was a 2009 model, I'd be throwing money at them, but a 2008, not sure. I already have a 1,1 that I upgraded to two quad 2.6.

Any thoughts? Should I get this one and sell the 1,1?

if you're ok with the 8gb ram, jump on it.

buying more is pretty spendy on the 3,1 (and 1,1 for that matter).

This has been discussed ad nauseum, if you are willing to buy dual rank non-apple ram it's reasonably cheap.

Well, my 1,1 only has 5GB, so it would be a bit of an upgrade. It has half the ram slots used up, so there's some room to grow.

And I would definitely buy used ram from server pulls like I did with my 1,1.

No! It's a terrible deal! Please don't buy this! Just give me the URL (for investigation purposes of course) and pass on it. :D

Ha ha. Unfortunately there's no URL until the sale starts on Friday. They wouldn't let me buy it today. Planning to be at the sale first thing in the morning. Too bad a friend shot-gunned the 23" ACD for $50.00.

Seveej: 8GB should be okay for now. I'm shooting my web series this summer and want to cut it on the Mac Pro, which is why I got the 1,1 and upgraded it. By September, I'd probably double the memory or more.

It's a great deal specially if it's Mint. This 2008 3.2ghz sells for around $1300 to $1400 in the current market. 8g of ram is adequate if you're not into heavy 3D work or video editing.

Well, someone beat me to it. Showed up first thing in the morning but by the time I got in, someone was already there, cradling it. Oh well.

On the bright side, I didn't spend $500 that I don't really have and can put that toward my web series and adding ram to my 1,1 for the edit.
