what is the average upgrade in hard drive size? I have a 500 gig and would like to go larger but not sure if that is possible ? What size hard drive do you have and do you have the ssd or regular hard drive?

There is no average upgrade. If you mean the next size up from 500GB it's typically 750GB, and then 1TB.
You can go as large as you want, I don't think there's a limit to file storage space. The current limit will be what's being made by manufacturers. I think there's 2TB drives in the wild right now.
If you can afford it go SSD, but judging by the fact you want more then 500gb you're looking at 600+ dollars to get one.

It has to be a 2.5in 9.5mm HDD.
I believe the largest capacity is 1TB for notebook size.

OP, I have a SSD+HDD setup.
I use the SSD for boot and apps and my HDD for large file storage.
If you just want the HDD, Im using the Samsung Spinpoint 1TB.
Pretty reliable for TB drives.
256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD in the main slot.
Removed optical drive and put original 750GB in its place using an optibay mounting kit.
It would be possible, I believe, to configure that as a 1TB Fusion drive and have the OS automatically keep seldom-used files on the HD, but I've gone for the SSD as the main drive and am 'manually' shifting big, seldom used files to the HD.
Having seen the huge shot-in-the-arm that the SSD gives to performance I slightly regret not shelling out for the 512GB SSD, shifting the old HD to an external enclosure and 'disciplining' myself to live with 512GB internal (Eeeh, when I were a lad, we got 100K on a 5.25" floppy and we was grateful!)
HDDs and SSDs that are 7mm thick will work in a MBP as well with no need for an additional spacer to "convert" it to 9.5mm.
If you have to ask then you don't seem the need to upgrade your HDD. If you know you've used up your HDD then you should have an idea of what you've been storing and your usage.
Like others have said, there's no average. You can easily go to ANY online store and see what's available on the market.
