Copy harddrive

If I want an exact copy of one computer on another similar computer, can I just copy the entire harddrive of the first to the second? or do I have to reinstall the OS after a reformat and copy the exact parts that I need?
 
You can do that only for OS 9. For X (any version) you need Carbon Copy Cloner, which you can get from versiontracker.com
