My son unplugged during an update now it only boots to a white screen and an apple then after 10 minutes to a grey screen with his log on and a guest log on. You try to log in and it goes white for a second and the back to the grey screen.

I have no back up disks or restore points

I tried rebooting holding down Option button and selecting recovery drive but when I go to restore the OS it tell me the hard driver is locked . On the regular hard driver it says locked also so it won't allow to move forward.

Mac is about a year old.

How do I restore my OS by unlocking the hard drive and or recovery drive?

Please help anyone who knows macs!:

its been awhile so i may be wrong. but boot into recovery mode, then go into disk utility. the install drive should be grayed out. now check the menus of disk utility there should be a menu option unlock drive. it will then ask you for a password which i believe is the administrators password. then it should be ok to format and reinstall.
