Connecting late 2009 MacBook to iMac

I have a late 2009 MacBook and a brand new 27" iMac

THe iMac has thunderbolt connections in the back; my macbook has the standard mini display port.

Is it possible to connect my macbook to the iMac monitor to use as a monitor, and if so how?

what if both my iMac and my macbook are connected to an ultrafast university internet connection and can connect via a server to eachother?

is this possible to to use the iMac to "view the screen contents" of my macbook connected to the server and run the macbook off the imac in this way?

If that is so, then just use an Ethernet cable and the TB to Ethernet adapter and connect both Macs via it and use ScreenRecycler or AirDisplay.
You do not need a fast internet connection for that, the direct connection will suffice.
 
I sold my Thunderbolt Display and bought a 27" iMac late 2009 (for the same amount!). I use it as a secondary display for my retina MBP and sometimes as a normal computer (dropped in 8GB / 120Gb Samsung 840 SSD). it's awesome.
