I have finally decided to get a new iMac to replace my trusty 2011 Mac Mini.

I am very happy with how my Mini is setup - apps, data, config etc - and simply want to replicate this in its entirety on the new hardware.

Please can someone advise on the best/easiest way to do this? Can I just boot the iMac from a "Macintosh HD" backup from the Mini?

You do not want a clone of the drive... the newer machine will use different drivers.

Backup your existing machine with Time Machine... and then when you start your new iMac... you will see a migration assistant option to restore from Time Machine.
