App to get rid of the arrow in icons?

the arrow means it's an alias. i am not sure if there's any way to change the icon. you can try copying and pasting the regular icon (without the arrow) in.. but that might not work. i think the arrow is separate altogether.

if they aren't aliases.... can you explain what you mean and/or give a screen shot?

In the PC world, they're known as shortcuts, and there are ways to remove the arrow by editing the registry, but on the mac side of thing...

Hm... I just tried that, but it kept the arrow. I also tried copy and pasting a totally random icon onto the shortcut/alias but it wouldn't change.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to get rid of the arrows? They're not very obtrusive... and why not use the dock? There's your easiest method for getting rid of those little arrows.

How full is full?

I used to keep crap on my desktop and only my desktop (aliases, files, etc.). Then I realized the setup looked horrible.

Then I started to put all my stuff in the Dock, and it became cluttered.

Then I read a little tip over at AmbitiousLemon.com, discussing whether or not you should keep your dock full or empty.

They had something like:
Keep your most used apps in the left side of your dock, and link the rest in folders in your dock.

My screenshot below displays this quite well. (If you are working with Photoshop and ImageReady, such as I do, leave one of them out of the Dock, and use the quick link in the other app to jump to and fro.)

As for the arrows, they will stay there for any alias, so that you recognize it. You don't have to put the alias in the Dock, just the original. And if you need a folder for aliases, make that, and place the aliases in the folder. Link the folder to the Dock.

It may take some getting used to, but it's no big deal. Remember, leave yourself open to options. I even keep some of the same apps on my Dock in a folder, because the folder holds the other apps I don't use much. 🙂

I don't know if you know this but you can put folders in the Dock.

I have all my Macromedia aliases clustered together in one folder which I then put in the dock. It works almost exactly the same way the Apple menu used to work. i.e. you just hold the mouse button down and the folder upens as a menu. Then you can stick any icon you want on the folder. I put a Macromedia icon on it and an MS office v.X icon on a folder with my Office apps in.
