Photo Booth, QuickTime Player and iMovie can record from the built-in camera.
They normally save it as MOV or MP4 using the H.264 codec, AVI is an old container format, that is not supported, but any current and four year old computer can play back MP4 files easily. For MOV QuickTime Player or VLC Player is needed.
