Visual contacts in list view for IOS 7?

I don't understand why iOS doesn't do this. If you are never going to see the contact photo whats the purpose of having it? Always the very first jailbreak tweak I install.
Surely Apple must know that scanning a list for a picture is orders of magnitude faster than reading all that text that blends together. Similar for Messages (which is doubly confusing because the iPad version of messages actually does use contact pictures).
