"all" and "missed" in notification centre

Pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between "all" and "missed" in notification centre? Aren't all alerts in notification centre missed anyways? Why distinguish between the two?Click image for larger version

From what I can tell, "missed" is all the notifications you get when you're device is locked. If you get a notification while you're using your device and decide to ignore the banner, it won't go into the "missed" section.
