Hard disk capacity

I search in finders with following informations:
All files: 2674 files, 3.3 GB
Applications: 7.5 GB
However, my hard disk details shows 220GB has been used and only got 20GB available. I have been cleaning up a lot of files and also empty the trash. Why is there so much difference? I want to release more room in my HD and how can I well organize this?
Thanks.

I've answered this same question a few dozen times over the years.
