So I have mini 2.3ghz 8gb ram mid 2011. It came with 10.7. I accidentally installed 10.8 on my mini instead of the external. I like 10.8. But I need 10.7 cuz my printer is not 10.8 compatible. So I booted recovery partition and restored the mini from a time machine backup. Now i got 10.7.5 back. But when I hold the option key down before I restart I see my mini and the recovery partition. But it says 10.8 recovery partition not 10.7. Should the restore also restore my recovery partition to 10.7. Why is it still 10..8. Does this mean I can I never do a fresh reinstall of 10.7 without buying that expensive usb key.

You will need to reinstall Lion over top your existing install to get the Lion recovery HD partition back.

Do a option-command-r boot to Internet recovery and reinstall the OS. This will get you a Lion reinstall since that is what your machine came with.

This will not overwrite your data, but do a backup first just to be safe.
