That... would be... GENIUS!!!!

If we could choose hardware parts with stock android... They could hit a homerun.

720p IPS screen for me (no need for more), 3000 battery, microSD, 32GB storage, 2 GB RAM or 3 if possible, etc.

It would be great, but I'm sure it's not gonna be hardware parts what we could choose.

Sadly whatever Moto has cooking, I expect this will be USA Only :(

So excited. However I am worried that total customization (CPU, RAM, screen, camera, and battery to name a few) may not turn out the way we dream it up in our heads.

People nowadays just have too high expectations for these things. We need to start getting a little more realistic.

On a side note, anybody think the picture means anything? The guy is pretty clearly making an X...

Customization on something like this only means being able to pick a couple of options, but we already have this now. Pick a color. Pick storage size in 16, 32 or 64gb. Maybe even 128gb. Only other possibility for customizing will be a choice in CPU. Likely 2 options of the same chip, with one over clocked. This will enable "customization" without the need for supplying 2 different chips. Over clocking can be done on the software side. Less likely option would be 2 similar chips with one having twice as many cores.

And will we see nothing but Pure Android on this phone, updated directly by Google without carrier interference, but still subsidized and sold in stores like AT&T? If so, it might be a winner.

What would be the point of advertising "designed by you" if the only "designing" you are doing is picking a storage size? Choosing a storage size shouldn't even be considered customizing. The point of allowing consumers to "design" their own phone is to make it fit to their needs. One such need is screen size. Screen (and phone) size is just about the biggest complaint for people in new phones. Allowing them to choose their own is big.

CPU should be the last thing Motorola allows people to choose.

Do you know what it costs to purchase foundry space or outright purchase multiple sets of chips (SoCs), motherboards, and tool multi-lines for two, three or four sets of the same phone? The cost to benefit isn't worth it, especially if the phone doesn't sell well. This is simply economics.
But a prime example of "customizing" your own electronics can be seen on Apples homepage. Go try and customize a MBP or MBA. Look at your options. You will see something very similar from Goog-a-Rola.

P.S. Choosing a CPU is nothing more than clock speeds (this is what I am referring to anyway.) It would be the exact same chip, just over-clocked via a seperate software routine during final QA. This is fast and easy to do and Google can charge you an extra $50, at no additional cost to them. LOL

Surprisingly, I have to agree with Assault. In fact, I think the designed by you is likely referring solely to one's ability to customize the exterior design, maybe the ability to mix and match the front and rear panels of the device. It's simply not cost effective to allow multiple options of internal hardware (camera, CPU, display resolution and/or size). Pick your exterior colors/patterns and maybe have multiple options of internal storage, that will be it. I don't even think there'll be multiple CPU option because, beyond the small group of us that frequently tech forums/boards, most people have no clue about the internal hardware differences.

Yep. Definitely need more info before this becomes a big deal.

Could be cool. But often times with Google, what "could be cool" usually isn't. The Nexus 4 taught me that lesson big time.

Therefore, I'm cautiously optimistic and cautiously excited.

Let's hear more info, Googorola. I'm all ears.

It is a smartphone that we "design" ourselves. I see this as not being hardware specific, but cosmetic specific. Meaning the customization will be related to external appearance. My guess in something like engraving or having them put a custom picture on the rear shell. Think custom credit/debit cards.

Sadly, you are probably right. Even my idea of simple customization may be too extreme.

4.3" is too small. 5" is the perfect screen size

If you could actually customize your smartphone much in the same way you can customize a pc, or a Mac that would be genius! This phone is going to be interesting!
