The i5 cannot be restored to a previous firmware. You're only option is to update to the latest or do a semi restore with iLEX RAT or Semi Restore Tool. There are lots if threads in this forum that about the two options that let you keep your jailbreak.

Next time please use the search button.

You can't update to 6.1.2. because it's old and Apple is not signing it anymore.
You can update to 6.1.4 (or 7.0 in a couple of months).

You are trying to update to a previous firmware. Apple has moved on from 6.1.2. There is no way you searched this forum. This type of thread comes up multiple times a day. Apple does not allow old firmware to be installed on the i5.

Are you clicking "update" or "restore"? Have you made sure your hosts file don't point to cydia?

I've selected both update and restore put in DFU mode and tried to update and restore through iTunes and every time get the same message & no I don't know about my host files how do I check that

Yea next time read before you chime in there smart guy

Your OP says you are trying to restore to 6.1.2. It was only later on that you said you want to restore to 6.1.4. So was the OP a typo?

In any case, double check that you have the correct 6.1.4 firmware for your device. I believe there are at least two different firmwares for iPhone 5, depending on if your phone is GSM or CDMA.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, and I haven't posted anything because I don't have any advice for the OP. Having said that, I also thought the OP wanted to reinstall 6.1.2.

Please don't flame me. I'm just saying its easily misunderstood and everyone should be nicer to each other, including concise posts that can be misunderstood to be rude.

Personally, when I see an avatar, I typically assume the poster knows the basic "rules" for this sub-forum and tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. It's really easy to assume and misinterpret a post when you can't gauge tonality. Save the flaming for the trolls and ignorant noobs.

OP, did you figure out what hosts files are and how to check yours? I can provide assistance on this topic if you need it.

After the "stern correction" from the threadstarter, I consider it unlikely more assistance will be forthcoming.

But we shall see ?

And in support of those who misunderstood the initial post and got "corrected", I also understood the question to say the threadstarter was trying to restore their iPhone 5 to 6.1.2

Go to gs.apple.com on the computer you're trying to restore the device

Where does that lead you to?

What device do you have? What iOS version are you trying to restore to? Have you checked your hosts file?
