I know a lot of you are complaining about battery life, so I've decided to make this thread and point out how you can get your battery life back to what it was, if not even better then when you were running iOS 6. I'll keep updating this as a filter through log files.

It's not an easy process, and it took a little bit of reading through log files and testing to figure this out. Please follow this advice carefully.

This will fix 99.9% of your battery problems. I've fully tested this myself with several devices (including older generations)

Instructions: (Each instruction has an explanation below, the numbers do not signify any form of order)

  • 1) Install each beta as NEW.
  • 2) Sign out of all signed in services (see below for list), then sign back in.
  • 3) Location services (if turned on): Disable Popular, Frequent Locations, Location iAds, WiFi Networking.
  • 4) Turn off Bluetooth unless needed.
  • 5) Do not use the new "live" wallpapers.
  • 6) Turn off "Background App Refresh"

User friendly explanations:

1) Avoid OTA updating the betas.. but if you must, reset all media/content via General -> Reset. The way iOS 7 handles OTA updates may cause some compatibility issues if you've already installed apps, services, etc. Fresh install without OTA/backup is the fix at the moment.

2) This will clear any IdentityServices issues. Currently iOS 7 has a bug with authentication/identity services which clears after logging in and out, then back in. You may sign in again once ALL services are signed out.

3) This will clear out LocationServices bugs on first use. Right now iOS 7's geofencing and other location services (including the new ones) are not working right and WILL drain your battery. This fixes that issue while still giving you nearly full location services access.

4) Since iOS 6 Bluetooth is automatically enabled (with no icon) and you must manually turn it off.

5) Yes, the new wallpapers are battery hogs. Right now, they cause severe drain and logging issues (As seen under diagnostics) so for now, stick with a standard wallpaper. By the time iOS 7 is out, I'm sure this will be fixed.

6) Currently not working as intended, instead leaving apps completely running as code is not optimized. Turn this off and you will notice a huge improvement (and wont affect multitasking!).

Sign out services list: (Once you've signed out, you can sign back in!)

Enjoy your awesome battery life!

That's why I use Beta IOS on Secondary Devices Only. It never hurts to add a line to your cell phone bill and then add a phone of a different origin Black Berry, Android, or Windows Phone, (my primary cell phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4, although it is Rooted, everything else is 100% stock, that way I have a back up plan if something goes wrong with my IOS 7 Beta, And that way I will not be tempted to install IOS 7 Beta on it, since it runs Android 4.2.2 NOT IOS.

Would you be able to list all the apps we should sign out of?

Sure, here are the main ones that will clear battery life issues:

iCloud
iTunes/App Store
iMessage
FaceTime
Homesharing
Facebook
Twitter
Vimeo
Flickr
Rdio(Canadian)/Spotify(USA)
Dropbox
Find Friends
Find iPhone

Everything else can pretty much be left alone. These are the only apps that seem to be causing the issue via IdentityServices. There could be more, so sign out of everything you can to be safe.

;)

These steps may be good to curb bad battery life during the beta process, but everyday normal users will not do these things. It is up to Apple to create a stable build that does not suffer as a result of the standard delivery mechanism (in this case OTA) or the services that they bake into the OS.

Background App Refresh might help too

Actually the only functionality removed here is the live wallpapers. Everything else will drastically improve battery life and sacrifice almost nothing in the process other then turning off buggy/broken services. Toggling IdentityService sign-ins clears the current bug associated with it.. yes it's a hassle but it does work.

I hate to bring this up, but of course iOS 7 beta is really for developers.. so Apple doesn't have to make it stable enough for daily use just stable enough to test APIs.

I was actually just updating my post with that info when you replied. But yes, thanks for reminding me.

I get it. I'm just saying that we can't ignore the problems by going through some routine to make it run the way it should out of the box.

No I know, I totally understand. (See: Android) Just thought I'd post some helpful tips for people who are suffering severe drains and coming here posting threads about it.

Hmmm.. i tried these and when trying to sign into itunes again but gives me the following error....

Update: After numerous times retrying, it finally logged in.

Yeah, that's the identityservices issue. Glad it solved after a few attempts, though.

I did the OTA for beta 4. If I do a restore via iTunes normally and what not my phone will boot up IOS 7 beta 4, not back track to 6.1.4, correct?

It's deleting the account the only way to sing of from icloud? I can't find a way to sing off with out deleting the account from the phone.

Yes, sorry. It's the only way at the moment.

Correct, as long as you hold Option + Restore (or Shift + Restore on Windows) and select the Beta 4 IPSW.

This is a lot though... Especially signing out of everything.

If you want to avoid signing out of everything, sign out of everything Apple related. (iTunes, iCloud, etc) and then just the "services" like Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, Flicker (under settings). You'll still see an improvement by just doing that.

Tried everything here, I dropped from 100 to 78 in just 2-3 hours of proper usage, no standby... Unless this is normal?

This thread should be a sticky. If people followed these directions half of the problem threads with each new beta would disappear.
